This Digital Audiovisual Archive is dedicated to the documentation, preservation, and promotion of the traditional music, dance, and folk poetic tradition of Amorgos and the surrounding islands, namely Donoussa, Herakleia, Keros, Koufonisia, and Schinoussa. The primary objectives of the Archive are the systematic recording and preservation of musical, dance, and poetic practices, as well as the collection of historical information regarding many generations of local musicians and folk poets. The archive hosts all types of sources, including audio, visual, printed, and oral materials, which are organized into categories such as songs, instrumental tunes, folk poetry, audio files, videos, photographs, archives, and biographies.<\/p>\n

The dance tradition is extensively documented and includes various genres, such as Cycladic dances like Syrtos (including Selyvrianos, Politikos, Thermiotikos, and Syrianos), the Amorgian Sousta, Ballos, and Kalamatianos. Other recorded genres include Mantinades (as a dance practice), Zeibekiko, Karsilamas, Hasaposerviko, and European dances such as Waltz and Tango. The material is derived from field recordings, historical recordings, interviews with local musicians and community members, and significant private archives. Specific collections include the archive of Georgios A. Mavros, the photographic archive of Antonios Vlavianos, the audiovisual archive of Ioannis Kovaios, and the archive of Emmanouil Ioannidis (Amorginos), which originates from the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre of the Academy of Athens.<\/p>\n

The Digital Archive provides a wealth of material as a source for future research in the fields of Greek Folklore, Ethnomusicology, Ethnography, and Social Anthropology.<\/p>\n
